_Background_ Ryo Saeba is the name he got when they found him in the
wreck of a plane as a small child. Amnesiac, he was adopted by freedom
fighters in the Central American country the plane had crashed in. He
was trained in the use of a gun from a very early age, and excelled to
the point that he was allowed to join actual guerilla forces before age
12.
Eventually, the freedom fighters lost their battle, and young Ryo
was sent to the USA. There, he learned the trade of detective work,
especially bodyguarding, and amassed a fortune.
Subsequently, he was able to use his money to return to Japan and
establish citizenship there. He bought a brownstone building, acquired
a PI license, and went into business.
The client made contact by leaving a message for "XYZ" at the
Shinjuku railway station. Makimura, Ryo's partner, would then screen
the case to make sure it was worthwhile for the "City Hunter" to go into
action. During this period, Ryo seems to have done several favors for
the Japanese government. Shortly after the start of the recorded
adventures, Makimura walked into a trap and was killed.
Makimura's half-sister (or adopted sister; sources vary) Kaori
decided to take her brother's place. Despite early resistance on Ryo's
part, and continued friction over his womanizing, they've become good
partners and best friends (plus a certain amount of romantic tension...)
The City Hunter specializes in bodyguard work (to the point he's
also nicknamed "_The_ Bodyguard") but will take any case that involves a
beautiful woman. The "XYZ" code is still in operation, but so many
people now know where Ryo lives and what he does that they just seek him
out personally.

_Personality_ Ryo Saeba is a clear case of arrested adolescence. He's a
"sukebe" (wolf) whose primary goal in life is "mokkori" (I don't have a
direct translation for this one, but it has to do with male sexual
excitement.) If he meets a sexy lady, he *will* make a pass. He'll
also drool, make rude noises, etc. as long as he can get away with it.
While his sub-Neanderthal approach initially turns off most women, many
find redeeming factors in him when he switches to more subtle methods,
as he invariably does. However, it is a running gag in the series that
he never actually gets any. (Her Czech freedom fighter husband turns up
alive, she's a nun, Kaori drags him away at the last possible moment,
etc.) He is not interested in long-term commitment, having turned down
at least one serious marriage proposal. He is quite gullible when it
comes to women, though he can learn from experience on a given lady.
While mokkori takes up most of Ryo's mind, he is serious about his
work. If he takes a job he will move heaven and earth (and the laws of
probability) to accomplish it. While he is quite wealthy, he doesn't
flaunt it, wearing off-the-rack clothing, and driving a cheap compact
car. (And he's also frequently short on pocket money...)

_Quote_ "Hey, babe, how about we go to a "hotel" and get naked?"

_Powers/Tactics_ City Hunter is the best shot in the world, capable of
truly unbelievable feats. He supplements his natural talent with
several hours of practice each day on his private range. He also has a
variety of other useful skills. The "Fondle" maneuver consists of his
grabbing a piece of the opponent's anatomy normally considered private
and making lewd remarks causing the opponent to take STUN from
embarrassment (or excitement.) Obviously, inhuman anatomy will protect
against this. His Luck represents his uncanny ability to avoid
Autofire, Area of Effect & Explosive attacks, and also protect anyone
he's guarding. (It also covers other amazing coincidences.) His
"license to kill" allows him to not only kill, but brandish blatantly
illegal firearms in public, drive 100 kph the wrong way in school zones
and sexually harrass women, all without any police interference.
Like many comic-book marksmen, Ryo's overly fond of trick shots and
will use them as PRE attacks. On the other hand, he won't hesitate to
shoot to kill if he feels it is necessary. (Note: Japanese gangsters in
the series typically are _not_ experienced with firearms, even if they
carry them.) Against women, Ryo is more restrained, preferring to
disarm and tie up without harming them.
City Hunter occasionally uses simple disguises (glasses, janitor's
uniform, etc.) He makes a very ugly woman and tends to exaggerate
cutesy mannerisms when in drag.

_Appearance_ Ryo is probably in his mid-30s, about 6'1" tall with a
swimmer's build. He has touseled black hair and black eyes. The City
Hunter is quite handsome, but his face is frequently distorted to
reflect his emotions. His usual outfit is a light jacket over a
t-shirt, dark trousers and black shoes. His favorite gun is the .44
Magnum.
